Why Quasar Pairs Are Binary Quasars And Not Gravitational Lenses

چکیده

We use simple comparisons of the optical and radio properties of the wide separation (3 < < 10) quasar pairs to demonstrate that they are binary quasars rather than gravitational lenses. The most likely model is that all the pairs are binary quasars, with a one-sided 2{ (1{ ) upper limit of 22% (8%) on the lens fraction. Simple models for the expected enhancement of quasar activity during galaxy mergers that are consistent with the enhancement observed at low redshift can explain the incidence, separations, redshifts, velocity di erences, and radio properties of the binary quasar population. Only a modest fraction (< 5%) of all quasar activity need be associated with galaxy mergers to explain the binary quasars. Binary quasars

Quasar pairs are either physically distinct binary quasars or the result of gravitational lensing. The majority of known pairs are in fact lenses, with a few confirmed as binaries, leaving a population of objects that have not yet been successfully classified. Building on the arguments of Kochanek, Falco & Muñoz (1999a), it is shown that there are no objective reasons to reject the binary inter...

Do Quasars Lens Quasars?

If the unexpectedly high frequency of quasar pairs with very different component redshifts is due to the lensing of a population of background quasars by the foreground quasar, typical lens masses must be ∼ 10M⊙ and the sum of all such quasar lenses would have to contain ∼ 0.005 times the closure density of the Universe. It then seems plausible that a very high fraction of all ∼ 10M⊙ gravitatio...

The Expected Properties of Dark Lenses

We investigate the properties of multiple-image gravitational lens systems formed by dark matter halos. Both the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and Moore et al. mass profiles are considered, and the effects of quadrupole perturbations to the lensing potential are taken into account. The systems produced by dark halos exhibit two generic properties that serve as powerful benchmarks for scrutinizing i...

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks

A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...

Clustering Analyses of 300,000 Photometrically Classified Quasars–ii. the Excess on Very Small Scales

We study quasar clustering on small scales, modeling clustering amplitudes using halo-driven dark matter descriptions. From 91 pairs on scales < 35 h kpc, we detect only a slight excess in quasar clustering over our best-fit large-scale model. Integrated across all redshifts, the implied quasar bias is bQ = 4.21± 0.98 (bQ = 3.93± 0.71) at ∼18 h −1 kpc (∼28 h kpc). Our best-fit (real-space) powe...
